2013 Fox Family Grenache
Here's something exciting. We're doing a re-release of our 2013 Fox Family Vineyard Grenache. This wine is in peak condition, drinking great, and we have saved enough of it that we can re-issue for our winter club shipment.
Fox Family Vineyard is an organically farmed, tiny, five acre ranch on a south-facing, rocky hillside in Los Olivos. The vineyard is farmed by entirely by hand, including hand hoeing under vines and applying sprays with a backpack.
Blair Fox, who I used to work with at Fess Parker, helped his parents plant the vineyard and continues to farm it organically with John Belfy of Buona Terra Farming. Blair is the only other producer who makes Grenache from this vineyard.
Fox Family is a cool-ish site with great drainage that produces intense and concentrated fruit. When young, the tannins are firm and blocky, but this is what will makes the wine age so wonderfully. The aromatics are exotic and spicy, yet floral and pure. In the winery, to make this wine, we hand harvested the fruit, and left 25% of the whole clusters in the fermentation after stomping by foot. After a 3 - day cold soak, we let the wine warm naturally and fermentation started spontaneously. We punched down 2 times / day and pressed after an extended maceration of about 30 days on skins. The wine was aged in 50% new and 50% neutral French oak puncheons and wasn’t racked until bottling.
The result is a medium to full-bodied beauty with tons of Grenache charm and texture. The 2013 has notes of spice box, mulled red and black fruits, dried earth and pepper.
