The Kimsey Vineyard is a small, organically farmed, 22-acre vineyard in the Ballard Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara County. The vineyard was planted in 2008 mostly to Syrah with a small amount of Grenache, Viognier, and Roussanne.

In 2013 we began working with Kimsey Vineyard, one of many vineyards under the direction of our friend and famous vineyard manager Ruben Solórzano (AKA ‘The Grape Whisperer’). Kimsey is densely planted, meticulously farmed, and is quickly proving to be a very special growing site in Ballard Canyon.

Our fruit comes from the Alban clone Grenache block.  This wine was made with hand-picked fruit that was 75% de-stemmed and fermented in an open top tank.  We aged in 50% new and 50% older French oak puncheons for 18 months and bottled the wine unfined and unfiltered.

Pungent red stone fruits, herbs, smoke, licorice and leather hit the nose and palate with considerable intensity and power. The 50% new French oak barrels are completely integrated. This is a Grenache bottling of real character and personality.  The 2015 is also going to need time to soften a bit, but it is immensely promising. Kimsey is a very young site. Needless to say, it is going to be very interesting to see how things develop in coming vintages. The 2015 was fermented with 25% whole clusters which contributes to the firm tannin structure.
